Healthy, hearty and delicious Butternut Squash Black Bean Turkey Chili; a simple to make recipe that is packed with flavorful ingredients! {Gluten and dairy-free}
You guys, this soup! Chili? It’s kind of both – just depends on how much liquid you add – but either way IT IS SO DARN GOOD!
I’m all kinds of happy right now. Yes, I know I just posted a soup recipe last week, but it’s snowing today and that means warm, snuggly comfort food in is order. Soup is pretty much my favorite way to get loaded up on all the healthy stuff, and this one is no exception.
The Best Turkey Chili
This Butternut Squash Black Bean Turkey Chili is probably one of my favorite soup combos yet. It’s loaded with extra-lean ground turkey, chunks of butternut squash, and protein packed black beans. It literally checks all the boxes – quick, easy, super nutritious, and has bomb diggity flavor. You heard me: BOMB DIGGITY.
Let’s talk flavor because that’s where it’s at with this chili. It’s a perfect balance of sweet, savory and spicy. From the garlic to cinnamon to fire roasted diced tomatoes, this soup is not messing around. It’s flavor packed, and I promise it won’t disappoint! Even my kids love it, which is saying a lot since soups are always a hit or miss in our house with children. I don’t know what it is, something about everything being all mixed together in one pot? The broth? I dunno… but either way, I won’t complain as long as they continue to eat this chili. Because let’s be honest, I’m going to continue making it over and over and over, it’s that good!
Healthy Toppings for Chili
And let’s not forget the toppings! Topping honestly might be my favorite part of soups. You can really go as simple or crazy as you like. Here are some of my favorites:
- plain non-fat Greek yogurt
- chopped cilantro
- chopped green onions
- tortilla chips
- cut up corn tortilla strips
- shredded cheddar cheese
- diced avocado
- squeeze of lime juice
- pepitas (shelled pumpkin seeds)

Just wondering if leftover Thanksgiving turkey and broth would be good in this recipe.? I need a good dish for leftover turkey and dressing. This one looks so good. Thanks. Van
So sorry for the slow response! Sick family has put the blog on hold for a couple of weeks. I hope you found a good recipes for your leftover turkey, I’m sure this soup would be delicious with shredded turkey substituted for the ground!
I really liked this chili recipe. It makes so much that I had to freeze some. But it’s so good! I love all the vegetables and although I was unsure of all the spices (I didn’t grow up using too many), they complimented the chili very well.

Thanks Carla! I’m so glad you liked the soup! The cinnamon and spices are unique but I love how they pair with the butternut squash in the chili!
